The Coronary Artery Disease & Metabolic Diseases Committee of AAPI is committed to enhancing Asian Indians knowledge of the prevalence and significance of risk factors for CAD and effective treatments to reduce the risk of heart attacks in Asian Indians. The committee will develop a set of recommendations that are specific to Asian Indians for the management of various coronary artery disease risk factors.
Target Numbers for Indian Americans to prevent CAD:
Non HDL-C < 130 mg/dl (Total Cholesterol-HDL= Non HDL-C)
LDL-C < 100 mg/dl
HDL-C > 40 mg/dl for males and > 50 mg/dl for females
Target Numbers for Indian Americans with CAD or Diabetes:
Non-HDL-C < 100 mg/dl
LDL-C < 70 mg/dl
Diabetics should have HbA1c < 6.5
Waist Circumference: <35" for men and <31" for women
Quit Smoking
Blood pressure: < 140/80 mm (120/80 mm if you are a diabetic)
Regular Exercise for more than thirty minutes every day
Heart Healthy Diet
If any of the above values are abnormal, make healthy life style changes, seek your physicians' help and take medication under supervision along with healthy diet and exercise, to reach the target numbers.
